A Pop of Red (Again)

It’s time for a nail refresh! The last time I got them done was right before my trip in February this year. In the past month, I had been biting them so short and so habitually that my nail beds were starting to bleed. I decided to get a gel manicure with extensions as a temporary deterrent for the nail-biting.

It was a pretty spontaneous decision. I just woke up that day and knew that I wanted new nails, stat. These short, chewed-up nails didn’t paint the picture of a self-assured woman who had it all together. If anything, their appearance betrayed an inner merry-go-round of adrenaline, anxiety, and stress from trying to keep things at work under control. Getting my nails done would help me feel and look more put-together for the time being. Plus, I hadn’t gotten around to treating myself for my birthday yet, either.

Anyway, I knew for certain that I wanted cool-based red nails (they always make me feel like a boss lady in the best way), but hadn’t yet decided on the design I wanted, even by the time I showed up at the nail salon on Sunday morning. In the end, I settled on little crystals as the main theme. I chose heart-shaped crystals for my first/second/pinky fingers (though the heart shape isn’t very clear in these pictures), round crystals for my ring fingers, and diamond-shaped ones for my thumbs. The entire session took about two hours.

This also means I won’t be able to play violin for the next two or three weeks (I mean, I could try, of course, but it’ll sound more banjo than violin and there’s the risk of damaging the strings), but we’ll see how it goes. I usually cave after the first week of a manicure and end up clipping my left hand nails because I need to play violin. But again, we’ll see.

Tomorrow is a public holiday in lieu (Royal Brunei Armed Forces Day), and I’m not sure yet what my plans are. I’ll just play it by ear as usual, I guess.
